Why Airbnb Guests Happily Pay Premium Prices

Guests don’t calculate value—they feel it. Here’s why unexpected thoughtfulness shapes Value ratings and makes premium nightly rates feel worth it.

A printed welcome letter on a dining table with flowers and coffee — a thoughtful arrival at a vacation rental.

If you ask ten hosts how to improve their Airbnb Value rating, you'll probably hear the same advice: lower your prices, add more amenities, leave a bigger welcome basket. Those things can certainly help. But they all assume guests judge value like an accountant.

They don't.

Guests don't calculate value. They feel it.

That's why two almost identical properties can charge similar nightly rates, offer similar amenities, and receive equally glowing reviews for cleanliness and communication—yet end up with very different Value ratings. One host understands something the other doesn't: value isn't determined solely by what guests receive. It's determined by how they feel about what they received.

The question every guest asks

Every guest walks through your front door carrying the same invisible question: “Did I make the right decision?” They've spent hundreds—sometimes thousands—of dollars. They've trusted your photos, your reviews, and your listing over dozens of others. Now they're looking for confirmation—not consciously, but emotionally. And that search begins almost immediately.

The first few minutes shape everything

The first few minutes quietly shape everything that follows. If guests immediately feel they've made a wonderful decision, they naturally begin noticing evidence that confirms it—the home feels welcoming, the instructions feel thoughtful, the little details feel intentional. Even small imperfections seem exactly that: small.

But if those first moments create uncertainty, the opposite happens. Guests begin noticing everything that confirms they overpaid. The Wi-Fi seems slower. The mattress isn't quite as comfortable. The dripping tap suddenly feels significant. The property hasn't changed. Only the way it's being experienced. For more on the psychology of that first minute, read The Most Important Minute of Every Stay.

A generic note taught me something unexpected

I once stayed in a hotel that left a welcome note in my room. At first, I smiled. I thought, “That's a lovely touch.”

Then I read it.

Apart from my name handwritten at the top and a signature at the bottom, every word in the middle was identical to what every guest received. My reaction surprised me. The room hadn't changed, but somehow it all felt a little less special.

That experience taught me something I've never forgotten.

Guests aren't looking for the appearance of thoughtfulness.

They're looking for evidence that someone genuinely thought about them.

The delight of unexpected thoughtfulness

Guests expect professionalism, a clean home, fresh linen, and a digital check-in message. What they don't expect is to discover that someone genuinely prepared for them.

Imagine unlocking the door to find a beautifully printed welcome letter waiting for you. It greets you by name. Perhaps it welcomes your dog. Perhaps it wishes you a happy anniversary. Perhaps it simply says: “We've been expecting you.”

The letter doesn't improve the mattress, make the shower hotter, or change the view. But it changes something far more important. The guest suddenly realizes: “They actually cared enough to prepare this just for us.”

That's a surprisingly powerful moment, because people rarely expect that level of thoughtfulness anymore.

Unexpected thoughtfulness creates goodwill

When guests realize you cared enough to prepare something specifically for them, they become more generous in the way they experience everything else. Small inconveniences remain inconveniences—they don't become disappointments. Guests aren't overlooking problems; they're interpreting them through a different emotional lens.

Thoughtfulness creates goodwill. Goodwill changes perception. Perception shapes value. If you want the longer story of how that works—and why it protects reviews when things go wrong—read Why Goodwill Is the Secret to Better Airbnb Reviews.

Premium prices don't require perfection

As platform commissions increase and dynamic pricing becomes more sophisticated, many hosts have little choice but to increase their nightly rates. That's simply good business. But higher prices naturally create higher expectations—and many hosts try to meet those expectations by spending more money on appliances, luxury toiletries, and larger televisions.

Those upgrades can absolutely improve a stay. But they aren't always what guests remember. Guests rarely tell stories about expensive amenities. They tell stories about unexpected moments that made them smile—the welcome letter that greeted them by name, the message that welcomed their dog, the anniversary they never expected anyone to remember. Those are the moments that quietly justify premium prices.

Hospitality that scales

At one point, I wrote a personalized welcome letter for a guest. Their reaction was far bigger than I expected, so I decided to do it for every guest. That was the true beginning of JottoGo.

But after a while, I realized something: writing a personalized welcome letter for every reservation simply wasn't sustainable. That's where technology helps—not by replacing hospitality, but by making it easier to deliver. The best technology removes repetitive work while preserving the moments guests actually remember.

The real meaning of value

The best hosts understand something pricing algorithms never will. Guests don't leave wondering whether every dollar was perfectly accounted for. They leave asking themselves something much simpler: “Was it worth it?”

Unexpected thoughtfulness creates goodwill. Goodwill changes perception. Perception shapes value.

Great hospitality doesn't convince guests they booked a better property. It convinces them they made a better decision. When guests believe they made the right decision, premium prices no longer feel expensive. They simply feel worth it.
